Chapter 10

ANN could do nothing for a long time after she got home, but sit on her living room couch, frozen, digesting everything Lucy Rybak had said. The mysterious woman somehow knew about her dad, and how he'd abandoned his family to play house with a much younger woman. A woman who was barely twenty at the time he married her. Still a child. It was shameful.

She couldn’t believe she was related to a man who could take twenty years of marriage, two daughters, and toss it all aside. His cheating blood was running through her veins. It made her feel dirty, which was why she eventually got off the couch to take a long shower. It was during that shower that she made her final decision. Although she'd moved to Bay Shore to escape her family drama, she could not remain here, not with the Rybaks around. Not when Lucy and, possibly, Kay, already knew all her secrets. Not when she had feelings for Drew, a man drowning in his own family drama. She would have to build a life somewhere else.

She finished her shower, got dressed, and pulled out her large suitcase. Without much thought, she began emptying her drawers. Every piece of clothing she touched filled her with nerves, telling her she was doing something wrong.

I’m not doing anything wrong. It’s time to leave. They know too much.

She sat on her bed. She could not get Drew’s piercing blue eyes out of her mind. Or his sweet smile that would disappear the moment he saw she was gone. Should she say goodbye before she left? If she did, would he beg her to stay? Ann wasn’t sure why her heart sped up thinking about seeing Drew one more time or why suddenly she could not imagine packing another thing without doing so.

A loud knock brought her to her feet again, and the image of Drew begging her to stay disappeared. She fought the blush racing to her cheeks as she walked downstairs to answer the door. Thinking about Drew frazzled her so much, she didn’t have time to worry about who was knocking. So, when Ann opened the door—and Kay, Louise, and Beast all stared back at her from the front porch—it was a shock to her senses.

“Hi, Ann.” Louise smiled, breaking the silence at once. “We brought you back Beast.” She picked up Ann’s little dog and held him up for Ann’s inspection as if this were necessary. Maybe it was, considering she had yet to recover from their sudden appearance.

She swallowed hard, calling on her manners. “Thank you.”

Ann reached out and accepted Beast from Louise, trying to remain calm. Kay’s presence made her nervous. What did the woman know? What had she seen?

“How was your first day of work?” Louise asked, obviously trying to break the tension.

“It was fine,” she said, offering a thin smile. “Just boring professional development. You know, meetings and such. The kids don’t return to class for another week.”

“That’s right,” Louise said quickly, latching onto the conversation Ann provided.
